These Studio Apartment Design Ideas Will Help You Live Large in 2024

Skip table lamps and opt for wall sconces which save space and always feel more impressive than other light fixtures. The sconces in this Amsterdam primary bedroom by designer Madelon Oudshoorn Spaargaren allowed for smaller nightstands that take up less space in the room. If a big ol’ chandelier doesn’t fall into your bedroom makeover plans, for reasons of space or otherwise, sconces will add a similar, sophisticated appeal to your bedroom.

Pair Brown and Blue

To that end, painting it a calming color (being, lavender, blue, green or gray) can have a prodigious effect, like in this modern bedroom. Using one color throughout the entire space helps the room feel cozy and intimate. In her Manhattan primary bedroom, designer Alexa Hampton used rich plums and deep crimsons. DIY is always a good way to stick to a budget too, so give painting and wallpapering a go yourself as any DIY novice can do these successfully. You want a small home office to fit seamlessly into your bedroom decor, so pick furniture and accessories that match the room's style. Let's be honest, you don't want a massive ergonomic office chair and a huge cumbersome desk, so go for slimline, stylish office furniture that could even double up as a dressing table.

An eye-catching gallery wall can make your bedroom feel sophisticated and luxe, plus it saves you from boringly plain bedroom walls. Interior designer Philip Gorrivan used a gallery wall in his East Village apartment’s bedroom, placing framed works on the wall to the left of the bed and around the tufted headboard. Only an expert would think to pick bed linen that matches the tones of the artworks too.

Paint the Walls Green

For your bedding add different textures to give your bed depth. Natural woods and materials such as rattan and sea grass are great options. Monique Valeris is the home design director for Good Housekeeping, where she oversees the brand's home decorating coverage across print and digital.

Light is the understated pieces that give personality to your space. Whether you're after a ceiling fan with a light, lamp or a chandelier - lighting is a functional element that can bring a fun design element. Symmetry is one word Clara Jung, principal of Banner Day Interiors, kept in mind when designing this bedroom full of neutrals.

Create a designated spot for cuddling up with a good read, like this striped armchair sitting in the corner. To complete this cozy bedroom, designer Nellie Howard Ossi brings in soothing cool tones, like green and blue patterned curtains and floral bedding. Designer Elizabeth Hay embraces the unique millwork in this bedroom by playing up the farmhouse whimsy with tons of patterns and color.

A modern bedroom may sound cold and sterile, but the results are often incredibly inviting. With the right elements—including vibrant colors, soft textures, and warm wood furnishings—modern design can feel right at home in a primary suite or guest room. These tranquil retreats take advantage of natural light for a bright and airy feel and pare down furnishings to the essentials to create an uncluttered spot for relaxation. We’ve gathered bedrooms in homes from New York to Hong Kong that use streamlined pieces and minimalist layouts to beautiful effect. Below, find modern bedroom ideas from spaces by designers such as Shawn Henderson, Waldo Fernandez, and Amy Lau.

In Rowe’s New York City apartment, the “office” simply pushes up against the living room sofa. Stacks of books and flower arrangements make it feel like a chic console table, while a lamp—conveniently—lights both the desk and those curled up on the couch. Once you’ve determined that, she adds, it’s important to choose furnishings that do double or even triple duty. I got rid of my phone line so I wouldn’t have to look at another phone sitting on the counter or cord running to the wall.

I went to the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC focusing on textiles, interior design and color psychology. Add a bit of contrast to an all-white bedroom by bringing in jet black elements. Here, interior designer Stephanie Brown paints the window rails black, hang a dark curtain rod and opts for a black bed frame. Feature walls are great bedroom ideas as they come in so many different forms to suit your decorating style. This room has just a hint of color with all those lovely peachy, blush hues.

Ever thought of using a bedroom storage bench at the bottom of your bed? This will hide clutter and be a place for you to sit in the morning while you put your socks on. This Hearth & Hand jute rug from Target will add a warm, earthy feel to the room. Now, you can DIY the look with just cladding but we have also seen some fab wallpaper that replicates the look without the hassle. We're also loving the barn door used in the bedroom to slide over the bookshelf; you could use it to go over your closet too.

Kaufmann family Frank Lloyd Wright

falling water house

Indeed, Wright added a guest house to the site in 1939 to accommodate the Kaufmanns’ curious visitors. The design of Fallingwater was proof that he was still a relevant architect, and even ahead of his time. Other famous buildings that were commissioned to Wright after Fallingwater included the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Throughout his career, Wright designed around 800 buildings, which is a staggering amount, considering how late his professional career peaked. The history of Fallingwater plays a very big role in Wright’s architectural career, as the uniqueness of the waterfall house resulted in international fame and proved that he was more than relevant.

The walls of the living room, like those of the rest of the house, are the same as the exterior ones, with parts of masonry made from the extracted stone. The floor is brown stone and the ceiling has a pattern which goes round the integrated light fittings, designed specifically for this house. On entering the dining room, on the right hand side, is the chimney, surrounded by natural stones which  emerge from the floor.

Fallingwater’s World Heritage Inscription

The house was commissioned by Pittsburgh department store magnate Edgar J. Kaufmann and his wife, Liliane, as a weekend retreat located in Mill Run, Pennsylvania. Impressed by Wright’s work after visiting their son at Taliesin, an architectural school designed and run by Wright in Wisconsin, the Kaufmanns asked the architect to design their country escape. Their appreciation for innovative architecture did not end with Wright; they also commissioned Richard Neutra to design another iconic residence, the Kaufmann Desert House, in Palm Springs, California. This latter house exemplifies Neutra’s approach to blending indoor and outdoor spaces and is considered a masterpiece of mid-century modern architecture. Wright described this 1930s home as “one of the great blessings to be experienced here on earth.” Inspired by the architect's desire to integrate human-made structures into the natural world, Fallingwater typifies organic architecture.

The large living room has a glass wall which allows those inside to enjoy the view of the waterfall, as well as hearing its relaxing murmur. The use of large windows eliminates the separation between rooms and their terraces. Amongst other purposes, they reflect the natural light and project it, indirectly, toward the interior. With this work, Wright achieved the maximum freedom of expression, while maintaining harmony with the surroundings.

The Kaufmanns lived in La Tourelle, a French Norman estate in Fox Chapel designed in 1923 by Pittsburgh architect Benno Janssen. However, the family also owned a remote property outside Pittsburgh—a small cabin near a waterfall—which was used as a summer retreat. The Fallingwater house is a symbol of how humans can live in harmony with their environment, instead of only using nature as an accessory or a secondary view.

Along with your exploration of the house and landscape, consider an additional experience to further enjoy your time at Fallingwater. In addition, Fallingwater's structural system includes a series of very bold reinforced concrete cantilevered balconies. Pronounced deflection of the concrete cantilevers was noticed as soon as the formwork was removed during construction.

Commissioned by the Kaufmann family in 1935 as a summer retreat, the house is perched over Bear Run, a picturesque site near Pittsburgh. Its design seamlessly integrates with the surrounding landscape, incorporating a waterfall to enhance Wright’s vision of organic architecture. The house seems to float above the cascading waters, creating a dramatic yet elegant dwelling that inspires architects and designers worldwide. Fallingwater, weekend residence near Mill Run, southwestern Pennsylvania, that was designed by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright for the Kaufmann family in 1935 and completed in 1937. The house’s daring construction over a waterfall was instrumental in reviving Wright’s architecture career and became one of the most famous 20th-century buildings. Fallingwater is located in the mountains of Southwestern Pennsylvania, also known as the Laurel Highlands, in Mill Run, Fayette County, which is about 70 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

After some doubts and heated arguments, construction of Fallingwater began in 1936. Local craftsmen and labourers were hired, and materials were directly excavated from the Kaufmanns’ land. Fallingwater was mainly complete in 1937, with the family occupying the residence that fall. It quickly gained fame when Time magazine featured Wright and a drawing of the building on the cover of its January 17, 1938, issue.

Fallingwater is famous; from all over the world many thousands of visitors come each year to its remote site. - a most unusual house in an exceptionally picturesque setting and something more, a reputation. The exterior of Fallingwater enforces a strong horizontal pattern with the bricks and long terraces. The windows on the facade have also have a special condition where they open up at the corners, breaking the box of the house and opening it to the vast outdoors. The house took on "a definite masonry form" that related to the site, and for the terraces they decided on a reinforced-concrete structure.

A stairway bounded by a stone wall and bookcases drops down from Fallingwater's top level to the second level below. In addition to Fallingwater, The Robie House is widely considered a masterpiece of Frank Lloyd Wright’s residential architecture. Wright’s illustrations of the house, seen from a slightly skewed perspective, are equally iconic.

As with Wright, they also loved nature and wanted a house that celebrated the beautiful landscape. They often went for picnics at Bear Run and always dreamed out loud about having a holiday home there. The Kaufmann’s were also well known for their very popular Kaufmann’s department store. From its daring cantilevers to its corner window detail and constant sound of the waterfall, Fallingwater is the physical and spiritual occurence of man and architecture in harmony with nature. On the second floor, there are two bedrooms, two bathrooms and Mr. Kaufmann’s office, as well as three terraces and the stairs which lead to the lookout on the third floor. On this floor, you pass along a small corridor from which the rooms are distributed.

Wright’s work also was published and exhibited widely in the early part of the 20th century and went on to influence world architects, such as the major modernists of Europe. His impact also impressed upon the work of architects in Latin America, Australia and Japan. These eight sites have played a prominent role in the development and evolution of modern architecture during the first half of the 20th century and continuing to the present.

The house is located on a huge plot of land in the middle of the wild Pennsylvania forest. The forest of deciduous trees remains almost completely untamed, interrupted only by a discreet pedestrian access which is the only way of reaching the house. The plot on which the house ended up is also surrounded by the “Bear’s river”. The Kaufmanns, who owned the Kaufmann department store in Pittsburgh, had originally rented the property, formerly the site of a country club, and used it as a retreat for employees of his store. They then purchased it and set about looking to build their vacation home. And whether you've been there or not, there's no denying the beauty and aesthetic power of Frank Lloyd Wright's famous Fallingwater here.

As part of Road Trip 2010, CNET reporter Daniel Terdiman visited Fallingwater for the first time and was inspired and deeply impressed by what he saw. This philosophy guided the ins-and-outs of Wright's entire creative process. Fallingwater proved that Wright was not an outdated architect ready for retirement but an enduring visionary ready for the next phase of his career. Some of his most high-profile commissions came after, including the Guggenheim Museum in New York City.

Using resources directly from the quarry and building the house directly on top of a waterfall, Frank Lloyd Wright succeeded in making the most out of nature while building. The Fallingwater house was and is a masterpiece of a residence, well ahead of its time. The seamless way in which Frank Lloyd Wright blurred the lines of nature and construction is a remarkable concept that serves as an inspiration to architects and designers up until this day. As previously mentioned, Wright and the Kaufmann’s had a close connection to nature and wanted nature to play an integral part in the aesthetic of their home.

A view of two of Fallingwater's main terraces from the third level of the house. Each of the building's terraces is cantilevered over the stream and waterfall below. The counterbalance was the house's north wall, which kept the building from falling over. Fallingwater underwent major repairs in 2002 to deal with sagging of the terraces and other parts of the building. This is the only kitchen at Fallingwater and was used by the Kaufmann family, as well as the servants and visitors staying in the guest bedrooms or guest house.

Who owns Fallingwater now?

The floors act as tiers/layered, emphasizing the falling of water and integrating the building into the landscape even more. Vined plants were installed above cantilevering rooftops, to further integrate the exterior building with nature. The owners of Fallingwater, are known as Edgar and Liliane Kauffman and were acquaintances of Wright through their son. The Kauffman’s wanted a summer home for their family’s weekend sanctuary in Bear Run, PA.

Fallingwater House – Discover Frank Lloyd Wright’s Architectural Style

The design showcases his appreciation of Japanese culture and art, specifically the works of Katsushika Hokusai, as elements of the drawing break through the borders, a stylistic device often used by Hokusai. Wright was a collector and dealer of Japanese woodblock prints, and his influence can be seen in his design and aesthetics. Frank Lloyd Wright’s connection to Arizona, the location of his personal winter home Taliesin West, runs deep, with his architectural influence seen all over the Valley. Here, PhD student David R. Richardson gives a brief overview of several of Wright’s most notable projects in the Grand Canyon state.

Guided Grounds Walking Tour

Because of the cool air coming off the river, opening the hatch let cool air come up into the room, cooling it and much of the rest of the house. This system was an example of Wright's frequent use of organic elements in his architecture. As well, when the hatch was opened, the resulting view of the river brought nature right into the house, another Wright signature.

In-Depth Guided Tour

Natural stone floors continue from the living room well towards the outside terrace. While its form is distinct and standout, Fallingwater was designed for a family to live in and among nature. Fallingwater is a 20th-century masterpiece in organic architecture—one that was created nearly four decades before the design world began to consider its impact on the planet. The habitability of the interior was what truly preoccupied the architect. The interior space had to be light and spacious, and so he set out to avoid limitations as much as possible.

Does anyone live in the Fallingwater house?

On the left is a “wine ball”, a red, spherical container fitted with a handle on a hinge, that allows you to place it over the fire to heat the drink inside. The one on the East side is next to a small exterior staircase which leads to the terrace of the Kaufmann’s son’s bedroom. To the left of the chimney, a door leads to the kitchen; a smaller room than the living room with furniture exclusively designed by Wright for the house, as was the case for the rest of the furniture also. Between the door to the kitchen and the staircase is the dining table, placed against the North wall of the dining room. For the vertical elements of the home—its structural piers and chimney, which also run through the interiors—Wright took inspiration from the specificity of Fallingwater’s isolated Pennsylvania site, as chosen by the nature-loving Kaufmann family. He clad them in local sandstone laid in horizontal striations, like the forms in its natural surroundings.

Available Tours

The building maintains a relationship with the surroundings which comes from a respect for and adaptation to the environment. As such, the foundations of the house are rocks of the place, and some are even found beyond the boundaries of the first floor, leaning next to the chimney. Wright’s engineers were not confident that the structure would support itself and asked Wright to reconsider his plans. His pride allowed him to back down only enough to agree to a number of metallic pieces which supported the cantilever, which remains intact following the effects of a tornado. Two floors of the house extend horizontally with prominent cantilevers and terraces.

In this in-depth guide from AD, rediscover the importance and magic of Wright’s most famous private residence. The construction of the waterfall house, naturally, proved difficult, as there was no solid foundation to build from, only water. Wright overcame this problem by designing “trays”, which were reinforced concrete that mirrored the natural rock of the site. Terraces of local sandstone were cantilevered to blend with the rock formations.

Edgar Jr. continued to live there with his partner who was the architect and designer Paul Mayen, who designed the gift store, café, and tourist facility that opened its doors in 1981. Fallingwater, the house designed by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright for Edgar Kaufmann in southwestern Pennsylvania, hangs over a waterfall using the architectural device known as the cantilever. The majority of the house’s structure is made of concrete, with exposed columns and beams forming porticos and the projections (the horizontal elements which extend as terraces over the waterfall) all made of concrete. Some walls and other vertical elements which define the spaces of the house, as well as the floors, were covered in the local stone.

Third, the series represents an architecture conceived to be responsive to the evolving American experience, but which is universal in its appeal. On entering the house by the main entrance, situated at the North face, we arrive at a small room which acts as a reception, located under the stairs which lead to the second floor. Past that room is the living room, the largest public room of the house from which there are splendid views of the woods which surround the house. On entering, we are faced by the “music corner”, whose etymology is unknown, to the right is the sofa area and behind the “music corner” is the “staircase of water”, so called because it leads down to a small platform beside the river.

But it is possible to stay in the four-bedroom mansion, known as the Historic Summit Inn Resort, which was built behind Fallingwater for a whopping $1,200 per night. Because of the cantilevering system that takes up the entirety of what should have been a ground floor, if built on solid ground, the living quarters of the building start on the first floor. Kauffman donated the property in 1963 to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, as per his late father’s wishes. The doors were opened as a museum and have been a very popular site to visit for millions of people since. Wright was born in Wisconsin on the 8th of June 1867, although he sometimes claimed that he was born in 1869.

Each level is marked by wide projections which protrude asymmetrically in various directions. In creating this impression, Wright was inspired by Japanese architecture. The exterior of the house maintains an intimate relationship with the surrounding nature. The architect decided to employ natural materials- wood, brick, rock- with which he achieved an impressive integration between the building and the forest which surrounds it.

In 1938, Wright designed additional guest quarters set into the hillside directly above the main house and linked by a covered walkway. In 1963 the Kaufmanns donated the property to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, together with 1,543 acres of surrounding land. It opened its door as a museum in 1964 and has since hosted more than five million visitors. Though the late American architect designed more than 1,000 buildings during his career, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater—a private home situated over an active waterfall in forested Mill Run, Pennsylvania—is one of his most celebrated. Considered a masterwork of the organic architecture style, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater embodies a harmony between site and design that the architect championed. Designed in 1935, the house is defined by a series of stucco-covered concrete cantilevered terraces that are fixed to the natural rock of the fall, and the façade is constructed of local sandstone slabs that create a visual kinship with its environment.

The interior layout focuses of Wright’s signature concept of compression and openness, where small spaces lead to large open plan ones. On the first floor of the Fallingwater house, visitors move through the intimately sized entry to a continuous dining and living room. A hatch in the floor opens to reveal an exterior suspended staircase that leads down to the Bear Run stream. Frank Lloyd Wright was known for designing a residence holistically, including built-in furnishings, lighting fixtures, and millwork, as well as sourcing and arranging furniture for his clients. He executed projects with a vision not only for aesthetic and function, but for family living as defined by the architecture itself. The architect designed almost 170 custom wood furnishings for the house in a style that blended harmoniously with the architecture.

Since Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater opened to the public in 1964, visitors from around the world have experienced this masterwork. We offer you extensive information about the history of art, analyses of famous artworks, artist biopics, information on architecture, literature, photography, painting, and drawing. No, it is not possible to stay over in the main house, as it is now an official museum.

That means that when you do shop for a policy, it’s important to compare home insurance quotes and make sure you’re getting a good price. If that doesn't sound ideal, most insurance providers will let you upgrade your personal property claim settlements to replacement cost value (RCV) for an additional fee. With RCV coverage, your insurer would reimburse you for the value of a new, similar couch at today's prices. When you receive an RCV reimbursement, you'll first receive an ACV check for the item followed by its recoverable depreciation amount after you make the purchase. house insurance quotes

If you have a mortgage on your home, your lender will likely require hazard insurance — the part of a homeowners policy that covers the house’s structure. A standard home insurance policy doesn’t cover earthquake damage, so California residents should consider adding a separate earthquake insurance policy. Homeowners can get one through a private insurer or turn to the California Earthquake Authority for coverage. The Nationwide website offers plenty of ways to manage your policy, including filing and tracking claims, paying bills and getting quotes. The company also has a comprehensive and highly rated mobile app. For example, you may be able to add extra coverage in case the dwelling limit on your home isn’t enough to rebuild your house after a disaster.

However, Erie is only available in 12 states, so a homeowners insurance policy through Erie may not be an option for you. On average, Nationwide is one of the cheapest homeowners insurance companies on our list, which helped it earn Bankrate's Best Budget Home Insurance Company award for 2024. The company offers add-ons like Better Roof Replacement, which will replace your roof with higher-quality materials in the event of a covered claim.

Although home insurance companies can approximate the replacement cost for you, we recommend verifying their estimate. You'll also notice that both State Farm and Allstate have the same coverage limits for your dwelling and personal property. However, State Farm's quote comes with more comprehensive protection in the form of guaranteed replacement cost coverage for your house and replacement cost coverage for your belongings. Generally, HO-3 and HO-5 homeowners insurance policies will cover your home and personal belongings against most types of damage or losses. However, there are several common disasters and liability-related expenses that are not covered by any home insurance policy unless you purchase additional coverage. It’s smart to compare home insurance quotes from multiple insurance companies.

Many factors affect your home insurance quote, from the size of your house to the things in your closet. Companies weigh these factors in different ways, so one insurer might be more lenient than another about your credit history or your backyard trampoline. Your home insurance quote may be higher or lower than the average in your state, depending on where you live and what it would cost to rebuild your home. Below are the insurers that earned 5 stars out of 5 in NerdWallet’s latest homeowners insurance company analysis. You should have enough personal property coverage to cover the value of all of your personal belongings, including your clothes, furniture, electronics, and jewelry.
